THE ART AND ARCHITECTURE OF ANCIENT EGYPT

The art and architecture of the ancient Egyptians is both fascinating and somewhat 'alien' to our modern senses. To 21st century eyes ancient Egyptian art is often mysterious - why did they show figures in such strange perspectives? What is the hidden symbolism? What does it all mean? The Egyptians made obelisks, pyramids and temples - how and for what purpose? What role did heka (magic) play in art and architecture?

This presentation will include PowerPoint illustrated lectures, detailed and illustrated notes, and activities to keep participants focused and enthralled. While originally designed as a full-day Workshop, various topics from this programme can be presented in the form of a short lecture/s should you wish. Alternativey there is more than ample material here for a two or three day School if you should wish for a more in-depth study of these topics!

Features of this presentation include:

A detailed discussion of the function and purpose of art and architecture in Ancient Egypt;

Focus on the characteristic elements of Egyptian Art (see suggested programme below) via worksheets and illustrated lectures featuring Ma'at Productions' own photographs of both well-known and rare examples from Egypt and international museum collections;

Frequent opportunities for participants to seek clarification, ask questions and open discussion on the topics covered;

A detailed examination of the relationship between heka (magic) and art, and a full explanation of how art served politico-religious functions;

An examination of the art of the Amarna Period during the reign of Akhenaten - a revolution in Egyptian Art?;

Detailed case studies of some of the major forms of Egyptian architecture (pyramids, temples and obelisks) - their design, function, decoration and purpose; &

Egyptian tombs - their design, decoration, furnishing and function (not included in the original one-day course).
